Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (literally “the one that moves is a vehicle”) was a famous 1958 Bollywood comedy. The film featured Kishore Kumar, his two brothers, Anoop Kumar and Ashok Kumar, and Madhubala. Kishore Kumar sang many of the songs in the film, along with Asha Bhosle. The music was composed by SD Burman and lyrics were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The success of the movie led the brothers to act in another comedy titled Badhti Ka Naam Daadi (literally “the one that grows is a beard”) to rhyme with the name of this movie.

Neil Mukesh is known for his strong musical roots in legendary Mukesh’s family but this is the first time that he is showing his singing talent to the world.

Neil Nitin Mukesh, who is making his debut as a singer in upcoming flick ‘Aa Dekhen Zara’ and giving him company is none other than our dusky beauty Bipasha Basu.

The duo has not only sung ‘Aa Dekhen Zara’ but also performed to it.

Surprisingly, Neil is a fan of one of his grandpa’s contemporaries, Kishore Kumar and the boy flaunts it very often.

The original song was sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle for ‘Rocky’. The remix is nothing like the original, says Neil.

kishore always wanted to be a singer, but acting was thrust upon him, and he did his best to live up to it.

A Leo, Kishore was also known for his mad-cap comedy movies, and for his eccentricity as he used to ‘talk’ to his trees in his home, and having put up a sign ‘Mental Hospital’ right outside his residence in Khandwa.

He was also parsimonious, so much so that he was in arrears to the Indian Income Tax authorities, yet never missed a chance to make fun of them (Aur Peechey Pad Gaya Income Taxum, Jai Govindam Jai Gopalam).

When he refused to endorse former Indian Prime Minister’s 20 point Programme during the 1975-1977 Emergency, he was banned from the Government-controlled media namely All India Radio and Vividh Bharati. Even duets with his voice were censored.

He refused to lend his voice to Bollywood mega-star Amitabh Bachchan, when the later refused to do a guest appearance in a Kishore-produced film.

He introduced his son, Amit, to sing, often along with him, and then amazed his fans by marrying widowed Leena Chandavarkar, who was just two years older than Amit.

In the comedy ‘Badti Ka Naam Dadhi” he included the song ‘Karne Chaley Shaadi Meri, Khud Ban Baithey Dulha’, sung by Amit in the movie hilariously chastising his dad for getting married, instead of searching for a bride for his son.

Kishore Kumar may physically be no more with us but he continues to live in the hearts of millions of music lovers across the globe. Two such music lovers are Vishal and Shekhar who have lived on countless songs rendered by Kishore da. This is why when opportunity to pay homage to the legendary singer came their way, they grabbed it with both hands and went ahead full steam on the job. Result can be seen in the form of BACHNA AE HASEENO, the title song of which is currently on air.

“We couldn’t have let this chance to go away, especially so for a number where we could pay homage to not just Kishore Kumar but also R.D. Burman, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Rishi Kapoor”, says Vishal Dadlani with a glee, “The moment this idea about recreating the number ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ from HUM KISI SE KUM NAHI came in, we just jumped and were soon on the job. When you hear the number, you would realize that we have kept the basic tune of ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ intact.”

Vishal-Shekhar has also created a coup of sorts by roping in Kishore Kumar’s son Sumit into the song.

“Yes, we have tried doing something different here”, explains Vishal, “It was experimental because while on one side we had Kishore Kumar’s voice being retained in the original portions of the song, Sumit is heard in the newer part composed by us. The number has turned out to be unique since Kishore da and his son would be heard in one single song even though the recording is separated by decades.”

Incidentally Sumit Kumar, son of Kishore Kumar and Leena Chandavarkar isn’t really new to playback singing. He made his debut with a song from the film MUDDA that had music by Jeet-Pritam.

Kishore Kumar started his cinema career as a chorus singer in Bombay Talkies. His first film as an actor was Shikari (1946), in which Ashok Kumar played the lead role. As an elder brother Ashok persisted him to follow his footstep, but the young lad wanted to do something that interested him the most, ‘Singing’. However, he refused to rebel Ashok Kumar’s wish as he feared the consequences.

In 1948, Kishore Kumar got a chance to to sing the song Marne ki duayen kyon mangu for the film Ziddi. After this, he got many other assignments, but he was not very serious about a film career. He was just following the shadow of the elder brother with a destined path. However, after some initial flops as an actor, Kishore Kumar achieved success as a comic hero with movies like New Delhi, Half Ticket and Padoson. All the praise and honour for his acting skills was still not the platform for his successful throne. He achieved his varied and un-battled fame after he was recognised as an established singer.

Music director S. D. Burman spotted Kishore Kumar’s talent as a singer, and advancing his singing career. Some of their best duo is the films, Jewel Thief, Prem Pujari and Guide. Some of their intial hits included Maana janaab ne pukara nahin, Hum hain raahi pyar ke, Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si and Haal Kaisa Hai Janaab Ka. The duet songs with Asha Bhosle composed by S D Burman picked the fame card with a flash. C. Ramchandra was another music director who recognized Kishore Kumar’s talent as a singer. In the late 1960s, S. D. Burman’s son Rahul Dev Burman also started patronizing his voice.

After nine years of smash hits and recognition he won his first Filmfare award for the song Roop Tera Mastana from the film Aradhana. From then there was no turning back. His career sore to great heights. Kishore Kumar sang for all leading actors in 1970s, including Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Dev Anand, and Rishi Kapoor. He swayed to such a successful height that there ws not a single person who could catch to his esteemed singing.

Kishore Kumar Lives on Among his memorable songs are “Haal kaisa hai janaab ka” from the 1958 hit “Chalti ka Naam Gaadi”, “Yeh raatein, yeh mausam” (”Dilli ka Thug”), “Aa chal ke tujhe” (”Door Gagan ki Chaon Mein”), “Mere mehboob qayamat hogi” (”Mr. X in Bombay”) “Mere saamne wali khidki mein” (Padosan), “Mere sapnon ki Rani” (”Aradhana”), “Woh shaam kuch ajeeb thi” (”Khamoshi”), “Zindagi ka safar” (”Safar”), “Chingari koi bhadke” (”Amar Prem”), “Zindagi ek safar hai suhana” (”Andaaz”) “Chala jata hoon” (”Mere Jeevan Saathi”), “Musafir hoon yaron” (”Parichay”), “Main shair badnaam” (”Namak Haram”) and “Zindagi ke safar mein” (”Aap ki Kasam”).
